What is Organic Cotton - and How is the Eco-Fiber Actually Created? In the global cotton production, only 1 percent is invested in organic cotton. We are often asked what organic cotton is and how it is produced. And what makes green fashion more sustainable than the widespread fast fashion? The biggest difference is water consumption. Organic cotton cultivation involves crop rotation, which improves soil organic matter and water retention. Additionally, rainwater is collected and used for irrigation. Moreover, there‘s a significant difference within the plant itself: Genetically modified plants, pesticides, and chemically synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are prohibited! Organic cotton produces its seeds, which can, in turn, grow new plants. For most small-scale farms, this is much more cost-effective, resulting in better wages and prices. Lastly, ecological cotton is hand-harvested. Machines that damage the plant and field are thus excluded, leading to improved quality. These reasons – for the environment and people – illustrate why you should also pay attention to fair and ecological production when it comes to clothing.
